Make Simple Farmhouse Style Christmas Stockings

The other day while I was supposed to be packing for a trip, I found myself sitting in front of the television cutting out stockings from my stash of drop cloth.  Yes, I needed to be packed and ready to go by noon.  Yes, I needed to make these farmhouse style Christmas stockings stockings too!  At least I think I did

I have a really nice set of stocking that are very special to us.  My late sister started making them for me and my husband, and after she passed away, my mom completed the the rest of them for my kids.  I love to hang them, but I have worried lately that the high heat of our fireplace will damage them.  I decided to hang them on our upstairs mantel, where they are not near a high heat source.

So, I wanted a new set that could be used on our downstairs mantel.  I knew I had a small stash of drop cloth hiding in my sewing closet and that seemed like the perfect source for my new stockings.

Here is what I used for my unique Christmas stockings:

I started by using my other set of stockings as a pattern.  I traced the stockings onto the drop cloth.

I was making 6 stockings so I needed to cut 12 pieces.

Once they were all cut, I took them to my sewing machine, and sewed the right sides together with a straight stitch.  I did not sew the top, obviously, since that is where all those stocking stuffers are going to go.

Once I had them all sewn up, I was ready to hem the tops and add a hanger.

My sewing machine started to act up at this point, so believe it or not, I opted for my hot glue gun to finish it off.

I had my stockings placed inside out and folded the top down.  I ran a string of hot glue around the top and secured it.  I then took a piece if twine, looped it, and glued it on the inside of the stocking.

The last thing I did was create a design for the front of the stockings.

I used a freezer paper transfer method to apply the design and the names.

I printed the mirror imaged design onto the freezer paper.  I then immediately applied pressure with a popsicle stick and rubbed the pattern onto the stocking.

I used this method because I wanted it to have a worn kind of look.

These stockings were so easy to make, I can’t believe I made them in a short amount of time and was still able to finish packing and be ready to leave for our trip on time!  Nothing like a little pressure to get things done.

And now I have a set of stockings for both my fireplaces.  I was a little worried about the hot glue on the stocking melting again, next to the fireplace, but they have been just fine.

  1. Haha, you sound so much like me, frantically working on a project when you should be doing other things. I’d say these stockings were worth it!
