With Thanksgiving now in the past, I think most of us are in full fledged Christmas mode. I know my kids have completely immersed themselves in everything Christmas. Today I want to share with you a simple Christmas DIY decor project I did a couple days ago….Leather Christmas ornaments.
I have really been loving the look of simple leather accessories in my Christmas decor this year. Our new stocking have simple leather name tags, and its just the right amount of rustic masculine that I wanted. This year for my Christmas tree, I had been thinking of new Christmas ornaments I wanted to create and I wanted to somehow use or make leather Christmas ornaments. This is what I came up with…..
These leather ornaments were such a fun Christmas DIY project. I am excited to be joining up with some great bloggers and we are all sharing fun Christmas DIY decor! Scroll to the bottom of the post to see them all!
But now, let’s talk about my leather Christmas ornaments. I have never really done any leather craft projects, and this was a bit new to me. But, I wouldn’t let it stop my and my most recent Christmas craft idea. it was easy to fix this…I did some research and figured out what I would need to make this Christmas DIY decor.
What you need to make leather Christmas ornaments:
- 1/2 inch leather strips
- Leather Rivets (I found this inexpensive set that I can use hundreds of times)
- Twine to hang them
For one ornament you will need to cut 5 strips of leather. These are the measurements for the one I made, you can easily change the measurements and make them a bit different.
You will need:
- 1- 4 1/2 inch long leather strip
- 2- 5 1/2 inch leather strips
- 2- 7 inch long leather strips
First you want to use your rivet tool to punch small holes in each end of the strips you have cut. I just eyeballed them and tried to get them all in about the same spot.
Next, once they all have holes in them, find an appropriately sized rivet and you will feed your strips onto the male end of the rivet. You want the order to go like this
7″, 5.5″, 4.5″, 5.5″, 7″
The smallest one needs to be in the center. You will want to make sure your outer strips have the side of the leather facing out of what you want seen. I chose the finished side on my leather. It would look great either way though!
Next, you want to put the female end of the rivet on and make sure the leather straps are all lined up together and then use hammer to secure the rivet together. If you chose the correct size rivet, it should tighten around the leather and they wont move. You can also use one slightly larger so that you can arrange the leather ornament pieces anytime.
Once you have one side done, you can move on the to the other side. Now, you can either do the other side just the same, or you can add a simple piece of twine in the middle of the leather pieces that will serve as the hanger for the leather Christmas ornament,
I loop the string around the rivet and sandwich it between the top piece of leather before hammering them together. Once the last side is nailed together you will see the shape of your leather ornament take hold. It turns into the cutest piece of DIY Christmas decor!
They are a happy addition to my Christmas tree decor this year!
I love the lines! I love the look of the leather along with the pine boughs. These kinds of Christmas craft ideas are just so fun!
I hope you enjoyed this Christmas craft idea! What do you think of this simple DIY Christmas decor? Would you use leather Christmas ornaments on your tree?
