Simple Fall Floral Arrangement From My Backyard

Hey friends! I hope you are enjoying the beginning of October! We are having some lovely weather, crisp autumn mornings with warm afternoons.  We would die for some rain at this point, but we will be grateful for what we can get.  As the weather changes, by backyard changes too, and right now is the time to take advantage of it.  I want to share with you how I made a simple floral arrangement with only items from my backyard!

I am sharing this with some of my favorite bloggers once again! Make sure to check the list of other amazing fall floral arrangements at the end of the post.

I was kind of in a panic about this post, because, well, I didn’t plan very well for it, so I started thinking outside the box, and decided I would challenge myself to make a fall floral arrangement using only foliage from my backyard!

To start, I wandered the yard, looking to see what I had that would have made good items for a fall floral arrangement.  I knew with the bloom of our ‘rabbit brush” I could use some of that.  We have a bush that grows wild, and honestly gives me terrible allergies when it blooms, but once it has, it does not bother me, so I cut some of it down and decided to use it as the base.

I also wandered the garden, and decided to use the tops, or tassels from the corn stalks.  They are such a gorgeous gold color and went great with the soft fluffy rabbit brush.

Then I wandered around the berry patch and found some purple thistles, which I think are also weeds! I really wanted to make something that I could create only by using stuff from my backyard.  I was super happy with the items I did find.

To start, I put all the rabbit brush in the metal pitcher, cutting them as I went, making sure they were all the correct length.  I then added my corn stalk tassels, which have the coolest look to them!  They add height and interest to the fall floral arrangement.

Lastly I added the purple thistle to the floral arrangement filling them in evenly.

Their colors were both vibrant and subdued at the same time~

I wanted to show that sometimes, you can create something lovely for nothing at all!

Maybe you don’t have an abundance of weeds and garden surplus you can use, but if you live near any mountains or open areas, maybe go on a fall drive and see what you can find!  We used to ride up in thee mountains in the fall to watch the leaves change and we would collect a bit of leaves before we came home to use in my house.

You can also ask friends if they have any clippings they want to make off bushes or trees.  Its amazing where you can find things!

I think I will be creating a few more of these before the last leaves fall from the trees and the bushes go dormant for winter.

  1. Sara,
Of course your creative and beautiful flower arrangement stood out immediately and I LOVE it!!!! I will have to look for Rabbit Brush since it is such a gorgeous base for your flowers. I always love that my husband brings me a bouquet of wild flowers when he goes fly fishing! Your flowers remind me of his picked flowers.

  2. Sara this is such a beautiful arrangement, it’s perfect for fall and i love the colors that only God could make. Fall is so very colorful and that’s what i love about it and your arrangement.

  3. Those purple flowers are clover, not thistles which would have been VERY prickly. I love wildflower bouquets. My Sept. birthflower is aster which is in full bloom now! I can only grow the wild ones! My favorite use of “weeds”, tho, was when I spray painted the spent blooms of goldenrod green, then painted the stems white and slashed them with black to make birch trees for my son’s railroad scenery!
