Its not secret that I we have taken real effort to take some things back to the basics at our house. This homemade taco seasoning recipe is one that came our of necessity and a desire to know what was in my food. From home decor, and large scale DIY projects to simple back to basics recipes and indulgent breads, you can find everything you need here at Twelve On Main.
A couple of years ago, I was in the middle of making tacos, you know like I do every week, because Tacos are Life.
I went to grab my taco seasoning packet and realized I was completely out of them. I was right in the middle oof making dinner so I couldn’t just run to the store. So I searched and looked through a couple homemade taco seasoning recipes online to see what exactly they have in them, and after trial and error figuring out what my family likes the best, I came up with this homemade taco seasoning recipe, which is just perfect for us.
This taco seasoning recipe has just the right amount of spice with chili powder, smokiness from the cumin and paprika, and has a bit of heat from red pepper flakes, which can be adjusted according to your preferences.
This homemade taco seasoning is super easy to make. I like to store mine in a mason jar so that it can stay on my open shelves with the rest of my spices.
Its so easy, you will laugh when I explain it. Take the ingredients, and add them all to the mason jar.
Put the lid on, and shake it all together. Use 2 tbsp for 1 pound of cooked ground beef.
I add my seasoning when the meat is cooked. I also use about 2/3 cup water to mix it all together and then let that simmer down for about 5-10 minutes depending on how much time I have.
You can store the rest of the homemade taco seasoning in the mason jar indefinitely. We use ours up pretty fast!
It is nice knowing what is in our food. Those packaged seasonings often have preservatives and even gluten. This is just one easy way to take control of our food and know what we are cooking with and what we are eating. It has saved me money, which we all can agree is nice too!
