The Perfect Versatile Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe

You guys, today just got sweeter, and it all has to do with this delicious cream cheese frosting! I have been making this recipe for so many years I can even remember…and I wanted to share it with you!

I use this cream cheese frosting recipe for my cinnamon rolls, pumpkins bars, general frosting on cakes, and the leftovers are so wonderful on a graham cracker….

When I was kid, I remember sitting and watching my mom mix this same frosting up by hand.  I would sit and beg to lick the spoon, or clean out the bowl with my finger…and now I have kids of my own that do the same. My only hope is that I can teach them like my mom has taught me.

I wanted to share this cream cheese frosting recipe for many reasons, some of them being that I will be sharing some sweet fall treats that include this yummy icing. Another reason is that its just so dang good and so dang easy to make too!

The sweet and tangy flavor from the cream cheese and powder sugar are epic.  Let’s talk about how easy it is to make!

You need cream cheese(obviously), butter, vanilla, milk, and powdered sugar.

I start with room temperature cream cheese and butter.  This makes such a big difference when you are whipping it up.

Start by adding the cream cheese, butter, and vanilla in a mixer.  I use my KitchenAid for this.  Whip it all up until it is well incorporated.  I then add 1 cup of powdered sugar at a time, along with 1 tbsp on milk.  Once you have all the powdered sugar mixed in, you will want whip it up until it is light and fluffy.  Its so easy and tastes sooo good!

You can adjust the stiffness of this frosting by the amount of powdered sugar you use.  I like a bit less depending on what I am using it for.  If I am using it for cookies or cupcakes, I will make sure to use a bit more so that the top will firm up and not be sticky.

Cream Cheese Frosting

This cream cheese frosting is the most delicious, and easy to make! Use it on cookies, cakes, breads, and cinnamon rolls!

Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 cube butter at room temperature You can use salted or unsalted butter. I have used both.
  • 8 oz softened cream cheese
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3-4 cups powdered sugar also known as confectioners sugar
  • 1 tbsp milk

Instructions
 

  • In a large bowl using a hand mixer, or using a stand mixer, add the butter and cream cheese to the bowl. Mix this until it is creamy and fluffy.
  • Add 2 cups powdered sugar, vanilla and milk and continue to mix
  • Add 1-2 more cups of sugar and continue to whip up. Once at this point you can add more if you want it more sweet. Add as much as you need to reach the desired consistency you want. If you want it runnier add less, or add more milk. If oyu want it more firm, cut out the milk and add more powdered sugar.
  • Scrape down the sides of the bowl to make sure you get all the ingredients incorporated completely. Mix for another coupke of minutes to get it light and fluffy.
  • Store in an airtight container or ice your favorite dessert. I use this frosting for cinnamon rolls, carrot cakes, banana cake, and so many more!

  1. This would be much easier if you would tell us how much of each ingredients and make it printable. Thank you.

  2. This is the best icing! Once you make it, it will be the only icing you will use.
    You can add chocolate chips for chocolate icing – left over icing freezes well.
    How easy to have vanilla icing, then add chocolate and you can have both flavors of icing on one batch of baking.
